A question of narration.

For quite a few people, David Attenborough’s voice is a familiar one, conjuring up images of nature in all its glory or brutal reality, depending on which documentary was on at the time. His enunciation is spot on and his accent allows for comedy to ease its way into the narration when it feels right.

I am one of those people. So, on the heels of the my recent discovery of BBC’s documentary series, “Life”, I Googled Mr. Attenborough. One of the first places I stopped was the Wikipedia entry for the series, and subsequently the entry for Attenborough himself.

In the entry for the series, I learned that it was released with three separate narrators, for different networks and regions. First, was David Attenborough, for the BBC version. Next, Oprah Winfrey for the Discovery version. Finally, Orna Banai for the Israeli version.

The Israeli version is completely understandable. However, it’s beyond me as to why you’d bother to ask anyone aside from Attenborough to narrate the English language version – no matter which network it’s playing on. Oprah doesn’t strike me as the naturalist type who you’d imagine narrating a piece like this. When I hear her name, the first things that spring to mind are talk shows and The Colour Purple, not chameleons and hippopotamuses.

To be fair, I haven’t seen the version narrated by Oprah, and maybe it’d be easier to absorb a pack of cheetahs stalking prey accompanied by a softer voice, but I think I’ll still opt for David’s version any day.

Enjoy.

stillness is the move.

The Guess Who‘s bassist Jim Kale was once quoted as saying “I wouldn’t let someone take my Canadian citizenship from me for anything.” and I very much feel the same.

Today is Canada day, and like many places, there are massive outages in the business and service sectors, and people are generally seeking R&R via their cottage, barbecue, or public events. In my town, many events have been moved to a more rural setting, but the fireworks remain.

At the moment, a fairly non-Canadian sound is flooding my apartment. The song below, “Stillness is the move” by Dirty Projectors (Brooklyn), has been a long favorite, and the video is pretty great, too. For a city I’ve never visited, via its culture I feel like I know many of the artists and musicians that have called it home.

It resonates today specifically, since it’s an uncharacteristically still, unpopulated scene while walking downtown. The apartment is empty aside from me. Life without animals is odd after having a constant presence for the past 3 years.

Lastly, the song is not really representative of my general musical preferences (read:indie hip-hop, climactic and progressive rock), but this track is a keeper in my books.

it seems…

summer

…as though summer may have actually arrived.  though this photo is not current, it is fairly representative of the weather and sky here today.

as you may have noticed, i’ve installed wordpress, and am in the process of developing the front end.  it’s been a smooth transition, and have really enjoyed learning the ins and outs. (can you say late to the game?)

so check back soon and i should have a whole new look.
